What is Powder Coating?

The powder coating process uses a solvent free mix of plastic resins, pigments, and fillers that melt and fuse together when heated.  The solid particles of coating are electro-statically charged in a spray gun and carried by low velocity air to the surface of the piece to be coated.  This does not limit us to one solid color, so a wide range of effects is possible.  The electrostatic charge holds the powder particles in place while the part is cured in a 400-degree oven.  The heat of the oven causes a chemical reaction to occur and the powder to cure, creating a highly durable finish.

What Can I Powder Coat?

Any metal object that can hold an electrostatic charge and withstand the heat of the curing process can be powder coated. Powder can be applied to intricate surfaces and still maintain a uniform finish across the entire piece.

How Large An Item Can Be Powder Coated?

We can powder-coat anything from small automotive parts to large structural steel.  Custom Powder Coating is a batch operation. Every item is hung on a cart, coated, and rolled into the oven for curing. We currently have one large batch oven to meet your production needs. Our oven dimensions are 15’ x 13’ x 10’.

Will A Powder Coated Finish Last?

The performance characteristics of powder coating match or exceed the characteristics achieved from conventional solvent-based coatings. Powder coating provides an extremely durable finish and has bonding capabilities superior to traditional wet paint. In addition it has excellent chemical resistance. Typically, powder coatings are very scratch resistant, and scrapes and scratches can often be buffed away because it is harder to scratch the coating all the way to the metal. And because of the superior bonding capability of powder coating, a scratch that does go all the way to the metal does not cause the coating to flake off of the metal like traditional paint often does. This also means that powder coated metals will be less likely to oxidize, as moisture can not

Does Powder Coating Negatively Affect The Environment?

Powder coating is an environmentally friendly process, unlike solvent-based wet-paint systems. With EPA regulations growing ever stricter, powder coating is fast becoming the technology of choice. Since the powder coating process does not use solvents in any way, VOC emission problems are eliminated.
